OVERVIEW

I have nine years of experience as a journalist with an emphasis on science and climate reporting.

I am currently a Senior Reporter and science writer at the London office for China Daily, which is China’s largest English language newspaper. In this role I have covered every aspect of the United Kingdom’s road to net zero, while developing a broad network of contacts in climate science and policy making.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Senior Reporter and Science Writer (China Daily, London) 2016-Present

• I have gained a reputation for quality science writing at a global media company. I write full-page packages, in-depth features, and breaking news. In 2019 I was posted in China to work with head office, I was promoted to Senior Reporter, and I also won China Daily’s Excellent Performance Award, an accolade given each year to 40 journalists and editors out of around 3,000 eligible employees.

• I have amassed a vast portfolio of science and tech stories while in the UK. I recently reported from the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, I have visited institutes and labs across the UK for in-depth features on 3D materials, antibiotic resistance, and renewable energy among numerous other topics. I am currently focusing on the UK’s road to net zero and all aspects of the COVID-19 crisis

Science Writer (The European Research Media Center, Barcelona) 2016

• I covered new green construction materials as a contracted science writer at this EU-funded media portal for European innovation. During this time I also freelanced for the Washington Post and El País.

• I consistently kept my audience in mind when repurposing technical interviews from scientists and engineers into engaging, reader-friendly content.

Editor (The Santiago Times, Santiago) 2014

• I showed strong and organised leadership while managing a small team of journalists at this English-language paper in Chile. I assigned daily topics, edited articles for veracity and flow, edited and formatted our daily newsletter, and maintained the publication’s voice across social media and online content.

• I orchestrated coverage of the 2014 Iquique earthquake that displaced 80,000 people, oversaw the publication of a special edition on the 40th anniversary of the Pinochet-led coup, and arranged interviews with several candidates in the lead up to the 2014 presidential election.

Contributor, World Cup Coverage (ESPN, Chile, Brazil) 2014

• My work was shown to stand out in a crowded sports journalism market when I was headhunted by ESPN to cover Chile’s national football team for the World Cup in Brazil.

• I displayed writing flair and technical ability, alternating between features, columns, and match reports during the competition.

Deputy Editor and Reporter (The Santiago Times, Santiago) 2012

• I was able to adapt quickly to a different culture and language when I worked as a reporter in Chile.

• I showed my determination and sense for adventure by pitching ambitious science pieces, including travelling to a high-altitude desert to cover the opening of the ALMA telescope and visiting Patagonia to report on the impact of hydroelectric dams on local communities.

Press Officer (This is Chile, Santiago) 2012

• I kept audience engagement at the forefront of my mind when helping run the Chilean government’s promotional news site and Twitter account.

• I wrote pieces for the news site and kept a steady stream of travel, food, wildlife, and cultural posts moving across social media channels.

Speechwriter and Parliamentary Researcher (House of Lords, London) 2009-2012

• Accuracy, accountability, and great communication skills were essential in this role, where I performed research and drafted speeches for a cross-bench peer in the House of Lords.

• I gained a deep understanding of British politics during my time in Parliament, and I also learned a huge amount about the many UK sectors I researched including education, immigration, and the economy.
